DHV-led project to tackle Jakarta canals
News - November 21, 2008
A consortium headed by Dutch consultancy and engineering firm DHV is to dredge the canals in Indonesia’s densely-populated capital Jakarta for three months starting mid-November 2008.
The pilot project will start cleaning up all canals to pursue a permanent 40 per cent reduction in the number of people affected by floods.
The narrow canals will be dredged by introducing in Jakarta state-of-the-art small-scale dredging techniques developed in The Netherlands.
The dredging equipment will be manufactured in the Netherlands and transferred to the Indonesian authorities on completion of the project.
"We will also train people to operate the dredging machines," said DHV project leader Peter Vroege, "so that they can continue dredging on their own after the project."
The project will make the public and authorities aware of the importance of clean drainage channels and the responsibilities of all stakeholders.
At present the canals become clogged up because they are frequently used as a dump for domestic waste.
The project will start just before the rainy season and will be carried out in the Kali Mati and Pademangan canals.
Dutch and Indonesian authorities are cooperating in managing high water. The collaboration resulted in 2007 in a study into the frequent floods that trouble Jakarta.
The dredging project stems from that study and is being carried out on behalf of Partners for Water, a programme established by six Dutch ministries.
The World Bank has promised the Indonesian government a loan for the follow-up to the pilot project.
