Long Beach plans US$15 million lagoon cleanup
News - February 5, 2010
Associated Press reports that a Long Beach lagoon that is one of the most popular but most-polluted swimming spots in the area is to get a clean-up.
AP said the city plans to restore the Colorado Lagoon beginning next month. The US$15 million project aims to stop rubbish from reaching the 18 acres of saltwater, remove sediment contaminated with lead and other metals, and create a new channel to the sea.
AP said the lagoon was once part of a wetlands, and even hosted the 1932 Olympic diving trials.
Over the years, however, the lagoon has been polluted by storm runoff, sewage spills, trash and toxins such as mercury. Last year, the group Heal the Bay ranked it as the state's fourth-most polluted beach.
AP said Federal and port funds will be used for the clean-up.
