GE proposes halting Hudson River dredging if too much contamination released

Various sources report that General Electric (GE) is proposing to have further dredging of the Hudson River halted if down-river areas are polluted by too many PCBs in the second phase of an ongoing clean-up.

GE made the proposal in a report assessing the 2009 dredging of PCBs north of Albany. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has also released its own report.

The EPA was more optimistic in its assessments of the progress of the dredging effort.

Both reports will now be considered by a peer review panel, which will make recommendations to the EPA on the federal Superfund project.

Last year's work was a 'test run' for the far larger Phase 2 of the clean-up, a projected five-year effort regulators want to start next year.
