Army Corps of Engineers studies Noyo harbour dredge spoils plan

The Mendocino Beacon says the US Army Corps of Engineers is looking for a 20-year solution to place 400,000 cubic yards of Noyo Harbor dredge spoils in a beneficial use location. Representatives from the San Francisco District met in Fort Bragg last week to kick off their Noyo Pilot Study project.
"We're promoting something environmentally sustainable," said Craig S Conner, manager of the Army Corps of Engineers Flood Risk Management Program, at the meeting to gather input from the agencies involved.
"Efforts are still being made to find a permanent home [for dredge spoils]. We'd love to hear about other beneficial use sites," Conner said at the end of the meeting.
Participating were Noyo Harbor District staff and some board members, State Parks Mendocino District Superintendent Marilyn Murphy, Heidi Dickerson from Congressman Mike Thompson's office, the Coast Guard, Mendocino County, State Lands, Fish and Game, the US Fishery Service and others.
According to Conner, upland placement is problematic and not viable for the long-term. With no known land locations available and offshore dumping considered the same as a landfill, Conner and crew are looking for a "near-shore" solution.
Two sites are under consideration for the demonstration project, one north of MacKerricher State Park; the second nine miles north of Fort Bragg in the neighborhood of 10 Mile River.
