The Port of Rotterdam in The Netherlands has provided an update on the ongoing construction of the massive Maasvlakte project.

As it noted in its most recent report on the project, dated May 2010, around 240 million m³ of sand is required for the construction of the first phase of Maasvlakte 2.

At the moment, the contractor is shifting some 3 million m³ of sand per week, and as of the end of April 2010, the marker had reached the halfway point: 120 million m³ of sand has currently been processed.

"This means that the project is precisely on schedule," said the Maasvlakte newsletter, noting that the main share of the sand had been acquired from a sand extraction area in the North Sea and that some 5 million m³ is coming from the Yangtzehaven port basin.

This future entrance to Maasvlakte 2 is currently being deepened and widened. When the Yangtzehaven is cut through in 2012, the excavated sand will also be added to the structure. A

At the moment, the dunes near Distripark Maasvlakte are being levelled. Together with
the sand shipped in from the sea, this sand will be used to construct the future APM Terminal.
