Kelang won't dredge after all

The Malaysian port of Northport at Port Kelang, which is home to Kelang Container Terminal, has abandoned plans to conduct a dredging campaign that would have allowed it to accept deep draft ships.

According to a report in Journal of Commerce Online, a review of the proposed project by independent experts concluded that the project was too expensive to carry out and could risk damaging other port infrastructure.

Currently, the port has a draft of 37ft, which means that larger vessels can only berth at low tide. Earlier this month the port reportedly had to turn away a 6,800teu container ship.
