Queen of the Netherlands completes Stage 1 dredging of Port Phillip Bay
Project Updates - August 16, 2005

Stage One of the trial dredging project at Port Phillip Bay at the Port of Melbourne in Australia has been completed, and tests have confirmed that the trial was within environmental guidelines, according to Port of Melbourne chief executive Stephen Bradford.
The dredger Queen of the Netherlands, which undertook the first stage of the trial, was due to spend last weekend preparing to start work in the entrance to Port Phillip Bay, in order to demonstrate that the vessel is capable of dredging hard material.
The trial removed 29,500 cubic metres of material from the bay.
"Trial dredging is an important step in shaping a sustainable project and we are pleased with the progress to date," said Mr Bradford.
The trials started on August 06th, in the South Channel East, before moving to the north of the bay, to undertake further investigations in the Port of Melbourne Channel on 9-10 August.
So far, the trial has seen 29,500 cubic metres of material excavated and deposited in designated dumping grounds in the north and south of the Bay.
A number of pre-dredge baseline tests have also been completed, which will be used as a benchmark for environmental testing over the course of the trials.
