Boskalis reports first mobilization of large Dutch trailer in Chinese waters

Dutch dredging contractor Royal Boskalis Westminster has reported what it believes is the first mobilisation of a large Dutch trailer for work in Chinese waters.

The company says the project for which the trailer was deployed, dredging for China's new petrochemicals facility at Daya Bay, Guangdong Province, is well advanced.

The project is a joint venture between Shell Nanhai BV, a member of the Royal Dutch / Shell Group of Companies, with 50 per cent stake, and CNOOC Petrochemicals Investment Limited (CPIL), also with 50 per cent. CPIL is owned by CNOOC (China National Offshore Oil Corporation) (90 per cent) and Guangdong Investment & Development Company (10 per cent).

Daya Bay's Nanhai Petrochemicals Plant is situated around 80km north east of Hong Kong. The new terminal is scheduled to open for vessels at the end of this year.

Boskalis has deployed the 23,000m3 capacity trailer Queen of the Netherlands. The scope of work involves the dredging of a berthing area, turning circleand the approach channel to Donglian Harbour, on Daya Bay's northern shore. The project partners arealso deepening the berthing area and turning basin serving an existing terminal at Mabianzhou Island, 10km south east of Nanhai. Around 8 million m3 of clay is being dredged by six NCWEB hopper dredgers and the Boskalis jumbo trailer. A dipper dredger, grab dredger and six split barges are also deployed.

Donglian Harbour and Mabianzhou are situated in environmentally sensitive areas, and the project methodology reflects CSPCL's desire to minimise the impact of resuspension, dispersion and sedimentation as part of its commitment to sustainable development. The main aims are to protect coral and avoid impact on spawning marine fauna. The Daya Bay dredging environmental management plan was developed by Boskalis consultancy Hydronamic, in cooperation with the client.
