New contract to dredge Calabar Port

A contract to dredge Calabar Free Port to provide a draft of 7-8m along the length of the navigation channel to the port has been let by the Federal Government in Nigeria.

The channel to the West African port has already been dredged once, recently, by a Chinese firm, but a little over a year later the channel is still blocked in places.

The company that will carry out the work has not been identified, but is thought to be based in the Netherlands.

Six vessels ran aground in the navigation channel in 1999.
