Ineffective dredging leaves Calabar Free Port 'stuck in the mud'

Ineffective dredging of Calabar Free Port by a Chinese company in 1997 is responsible for the recent lull in activity at the port, claims the Port Manager, Sola Alhaji Ahmed.

Speaking to local newspapers in Nigeria, he said ships are being diverted to other ports to unload some of their cargo before returning to Calabar.

Speaking to newsmen in Calabar, Ahmed said the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) "would no longer be fooled into approving a non-qualified or an incompetent company to handle the dredging."
