China "clears $1.9 billion dredging plan"
Fairplay (www.fairplay.co.uk) reports that China's Ministry of Communications has approved an ambitious plan to dredge a 2,800km section of the Changjiang river.
Fairplay said that although no date has been announced for work on the $1.9 billion project to start, it is expected to take a whooping 17 years to complete.
The plan proposes to link a number of ports from Shuifu in the south-west to the mouth of the riverat Shanghai.
Fairplay said the project also involves building facilities at ports along the river, and noted that China had recently tendered for more than 100 dredgers.
