Environmental Data

Planning, operational execution and management of dredging works at sea and along the coast and the exploitation of marine sand & gravel resources, require reliable environmental data & information, like geological composition of the seabed, wave and tidal climate, prevailing wave heights, water levels and currents and so on.

The following websites have been selected for you, because these provide excellent overviews and gateways to relevant marine environmental data & information:

http://www.eu-seased.net/ - Seabed samples from the Ocean basins and European Continental Waters

The EU-SEASED web service provides a searchable catalogue of over 300.000 seafloor samples from the ocean basins and continental shelves, held at European institutions. These metadata entries cover all geological samples and derived information products, collected in the European seas, and all cores, collected by European institutes in the world's oceans. In addition it holds a searchable catalogue of over 2.5 million line kilometres of marine seismic and sonar survey data held at European institutions. Searches can be made using a combined alphanumeric - geographic user interface. The EU-SEASED web service has resulted from 3 EU supported projects by national marine geological surveys and marine geological research institutes in Europe. Since its launch it is an operational service, funded by EuroGeoSurveys (EGS), and kept up-to-date with regular contributions from EGS members.

http://www.sea-search.net - Your guide to Oceanographic and Marine Data & Information in Europe

The Sea-Search webportal provides users with a central overview of ocean and marine data & information, collected and managed by research institutes, monitoring agencies and data holding centres in the countries bordering the European seas. Sea-Search maintains an array of directories and overviews of ocean and marine data & information resources from 30 countries riparian to European seas. Sea-Search is undertaken by a Pan-European network of 33 National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODCs), marine information services and divisions of major national institutes, from 30 coastal states bordering all European seas.

The European Directory of the Ocean-observing System (EDIOS) is an internet-based searchable directory of the ocean-observing systems operating in European seas. The EDIOS database currently holds over 10,000 entries. These comprise observation systems currently in routine, repeated and consistent long-term use, such as fixed platforms, buoys, repeated ship-borne measurements, sections, stations, remote imagery, observing the European marine environmental conditions (e.g. physical, chemical, and biological monitoring programmes, providing routine operational data. The directory includes metadata, e.g. measured parameters, frequency of measurements, geographic location, and data availability, technical information on instruments, responsible institutes and links to data holding agencies and data providers. The EDIOS directory service has been initiated by the European Global Ocean Observing System (EuroGOOS) and was developed with EU co-funding. Regular updating of the EDIOS directory is ensured by a cooperation between EuroGOOS and the Sea-Search network of national oceanographic data centres.
